The Italian National Research Council (CNR) is the largest public research Institution in Italy, covering all scientific disciplines and humanities. CNR is organized into 108 research institutes. Two research institutes, both based in Pisa, will be involved in this project.

The Institute of Informatics and Telematics (IIT) was created in 2002 to carry out high quality research activities, technology transfer and training in the field of information and communication technology, and in the field of computational sciences. The Institute also performs prominent technological activities, the most important being the management of the registry of the Italian Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD.it). Furthermore, IIT-CNR is one of the three components of the European Consortium EURID, which has been elected by the European Community as the manager of the registry of the recently created European Top Level Domain .eu.IIT research unit is represented by the “Wireless Network Models and Algorithms” Lab, working in the field of modelling and algorithmics for wireless networks, including applications to vehicular networks and Intelligent Transportation Systems. The members of the Lab, currently composed of nine people, have extensive expertise in mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, and communication engineering, and are involved in several national and international projects. Research activities are undertaken in cooperation with top level national and international universities and institutions such as theMassachusetts Institute of Technology, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Universidad Politecnica del Catalunya, “Sapienza” University of Rome, etc.

The Institute of Information Science and Technologies “A. Faedo” (ISTI) is committed to producing scientific excellence and to playing an active role in technology transfer. The domain of competence covers Information Science, related technologies and a wide range of applications. The activity of the Institute aims at increasing knowledge, developing and testing new ideas and widening the application areas. ISTI is
actively involved in collaborations with the academic world and in cooperative research and development programs, both national and international. The organization of the research work is aimed at stimulating flexibility and reactivity. The backbone of this organization is constituted by Research Laboratories and Technology Centres. ISTI research unit is represented by The “Signals & Images” Lab, which works in the fields of signal acquisition and processing, image understanding and artificial vision, high performance and
distributed computing, real-time data collection and transmission. The general goal of the Lab is to increase the knowledge in the above mentioned fields, in both theoretical and applicative contexts. This is achieved by studying and developing models, computer-based methods and machines for the formation, elaboration, analysis and recognition of images and signals, and by applying these methods and techniques to several sectors of the public and private society having strategic, scientific and technological interests. Around thirty people are working at the SI Lab, both researchers and technologists and engineers, covering expertise in computers science, engineering, physics and mathematics. The lab aims at developing its activities dynamically, fully becoming a part of the national and international, academic and industrial network in the field of automated vision and information technologies. 

IIT-CNR and ISTI-CNR both have been part of several EU as well as nationally funded projects. Among the projects more relevant to this proposal, we mention IPERMOB (funded by Regione Toscana), whose purpose was to design, test, and deploy a system for monitoring and delivering real-time traffic information in the Pisa Airport area. ISTI-CNR is partner in the on-going FP7 project ICSI project “Intelligent Cooperative Sensing for Improved traffic efficiency“ (http://www.ict-icsi.eu/), with the role of developing sensor prototypes for a multimedia wireless sensor network and computer vision logics for traffic monitoring. IIT-CNR recently established an intensive cooperation with the Senseable City Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, aimed at quantitatively estimating the benefits of "smart" transportation systems in large cities. As a first tangible result of this cooperation, IIT-CNR and MIT jointly estimated the benefits of a taxi sharing system in the city of New York, starting from the database of over 150 million taxi trips performed in NY in 2011.
